Zinc Deficiency in Corn – One out of balance micronutrient could have big growing season impacts for corn. Zinc deficiency significant enough to impact yield is typically identifiable by looking closely at corn plants from root to leaf. Consider using Tiger Micronutrients – Zinc 18%.
Farm Income – “Prospects for 2024 farm income increased slightly, though income is still expected to fall below its 2023 level,” said the Chicago Fed. “With drought conditions easing, cotton production should increase this year”, he Dallas Fed said, but cotton prices “have slipped. Most other crop prices rose…while cattle prices eased off highs.”
Solar Storms and GPS Agriculture – The solar storms that knocked out GPS networks in early May — prime planting time in the Midwest — cost farmers a “nontrivial” amount of revenue that depends on how long their equipment was sidetracked, said Terry Griffin, a Kansas State University professor.
Ugly Soybean Economy – A leading agricultural economist thinks the United States soybean sector is going to have a “very ugly” 2024 and early 2025. “Unless the U.S. has a substantial production problem this summer, it’s hard for me to see how 2024-25 ending stocks don’t end up above 500 million bushels,” he said. That would result in an average farm price of about US$10.75 per bu. for the upcoming year, which is below the USDA’s forecast of $11.20 based on its ending stocks estimate of 445 million bu.
John Deere Layoffs – Farm Journal has learned that nearly 60 salaried John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group employees, based out of the Urbandale, Iowa, will be laid off in the first week of August. Additionally, John Deere has confirmed with News 8 WQAD in Moline that over 120 production workers in Moline will be placed on indefinite layoff effective June 28. John Deere has projected a 20% to 25% downturn in farm equipment sales as farmers grapple with low commodity prices, high operating expenses and high interest rates for financing large capital investments. Sky rocketing labor costs and inflation are also having downward effects on net farm income.
Fake Meat, Real Investment – The Bezos Earth Fund will fund alternative protein development, which it says is an important initiative because food production is a “major source of greenhouse gas emissions.”
Florida Citrus Production at Record Lows – Since 2003/04, bearing acreage of Florida’s orange trees has declined at an average rate of 3 percent per year. In April 2024, USDA forecast Florida’s orange 2023/24 production at 846,000 tons, 19 percent higher than the previous year but the second-lowest harvest in nearly 90 years.
